For his PhD, Alex developed an organ-on-chip model of a blood vessel to study Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) and uncovered a novel signalling axis by utilising stem cells derived from PAH patients and transcriptomics. The potential of his platform for drug screening was then explored using approved and pre-approved PAH therapeutics in collaboration with AstraZeneca. In the Lewis Lab, Alex's interest is in scalable 3D bioprinting of thick vascularised tissues for regenerative medicine, drug testing and disease modelling applications.
